What is the difference between Active POE Switch and passive POE Switch ?

PoE switches mainly provide both data and power to the powered device (PD) through the network cable at the same time. With the increasing demands for the deployment of PD devices (such as IP phones, IP cameras, wireless access point AP and other IoT devices), PoE switches are widely used in enterprises, campuses, shopping malls and other networks with the advantages of simplified deployment and cost reduction.

At present, there are two types of  PoE switch in the market: standard(active POE Switch) and non-standard(passive POE Switch). What is the difference between these two types?

Before making a decision ,we need to know more details as below.

1.What is the standard PoE switches power supply? What is a standard PoE switch?

The standard PoE power supply has a handshake protocol (2.7~10.1V voltage), which meets the IEEE802.3af or IEEE802.3at or IEEE802.3bt standard. It is held up after the power supply device (PSE) and the powered device (PD), and the PoE control chip is responsible for detecting whether the receiving device meets the standard.

The Standard PoE switch is a network switch that meets the standard PoE power supply, According to different standards can be divided into PoE switch (IEEE802.3af), PoE + switch (IEEE802.3at) and PoE + + switch (IEEE802.3bt), Whatever the standard PoE switch, Testing before supply (mainly supporting IEEE802.3af or IEEE802.3at or IEEE802.3bt standards), To ensure power compatibility between the switch and the receiving device, To supply the electricity. If the power end equipment supporting the Ethernet power supply standard cannot be detected, the standard PoE switch will not supply power to the connected equipment, so as to effectively prevent damage to the non-standard power end equipment and play a protective role.

2. What is non-standard PoE switchessupply? What is a non-standard PoE switch?

Non-standard PoE power supply has no handshake protocol, no PoE control chip, no detection process, it will provide 48V or other voltage value power for the connected terminal device regardless of whether the terminal device supports PoE.

The non-standard PoE switch (i. e. the non-standard PoE switch) does not meet the IEEE standard. When the non-standard PoE switch is connected to the network terminal equipment, it will immediately open the power supply mode, which means that whether the terminal equipment supports PoE, it will supply power by the network cable. If the terminal equipment does not support PoE, the non-standard PoE switch may burn the terminal equipment.
